SPELLBLIND: UP Seal: Eagle or Parrot?
For decades, students of the University of the Philippines (UP) have argued whether the bird on the UP seal is a parrot or an eagle. It seems like this trivial fact has been lost into the long hundred-year history of the university. It’s about time we settle this once and for all, but first let’s revisit some of the opposing reasons.
On why it is an eagle:
* It looks like an eagle!
* UP was established during the American period so its logical for an American symbol (the bald eagle) to be used in the seal.
* It can’t be a parrot because parrots only repeat what is taught them; not a good symbol for UP.
* It has been published in the UP Forum that the bird is an eagle.
Why it is a parrot:
* Even if it look like an eagle, it is a parrot!
* Freshmen orientations always point to the bird as a parrot.
* Freshmen handbooks refer to the bird as a parrot.
* The UP basketball team used to be called ‘UP Parrots before it was renamed the ‘UP Maroons’.
* The seal is inspired by maroon-fronted parrots, Rhynchopsitta terrisi.
* Parrots are one of the most intelligent birds, more intelligent than eagles.
* Parrots have better adaptability to environmental changes compared to eagles.
* Madaldal ang mga taga-UP. :)AND THE ANSWER IS…
The bird on the UP seal is an eagle and NOT a parrot.
This slide explicitly describes the elements of the UP logo, foremost of which is “the eagle (with outstretched wings)”. If this official UP Brand Book is not correct, then what is?
Amidst the debate in online discussions all over the internet, Bong Barrameda, Research Consultant of Pilipinas GKNB, provides a reasonable explanation to support this fact.
The parrot myth started after the creation of the NCAA (there was no UAAP then) cage wars in the 1920s. The UP squad was then called the Maroons and Greens (now Fighting Maroons). When Ateneo later on decided to change its team’s name from the Blue and Whites to the Blue Eagles (although no eagle appears on the school’s official logo), some folks at the Pamantasan ng Pilipinas felt that UP should also have an animal sports symbol. And when certain individuals thought that the bird on the UP logo could not be an eagle because it was already Atenean property, the parrot fallacy was born.(via easykalangpare)

Well I heard that the bird on the seal was originally a parrot because a parrot mimics, and UP education is patterned...
